DHAKA: The High Court Monday directed the government to maintain status quo for six months on constructing structures on a 100-year-old pond at Shibbari Staff quarter behind the Dhaka University Medical Centre by filling it.
The HC bench comprising Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim came up with the order following a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB).
The court also issued a rule upon the government to explain in two weeks why its decision to fill the pond would not be stopped and why directives would not be given to take step to save the pond.
The petition was filed by the HRPB upon recent news reports published on May 21 regarding fill the pond to erect multi-storey buildings there.
Environment Secretary, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, Superintendent Engineer, RAJUK Chairman and Shahbag Thana OC were made respondent to the rule.
