DHAKA: Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University, Bangladesh is going to be set up at Anwara of the port city of Chittagong.
An inter-ministerial meeting was held at the secretariat on Thursday with Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid in the chair to finalize the act of the university.
The specialized university will be set up on the campus of Bangladesh Marine Academy at Chittagong, sources said.
Among others, education ministry secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, additional secretary Kazi Salahuddin Ahmed, representatives of shipping ministry, home ministry, finance ministry, University Grants Commission, Bangladesh University of Professionals were also present at the meeting.
The disciplines of ship traffic management, naval engineering and technology, oceanography, international maritime law, maritime strategy, maritime security, shipbuilding engineering and architecture, hydrology, marine resources will be introduced in the university.
On February 26 in 2011, Prime minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of the country’s first-ever maritime university at Chittagong Marine Academy.
The university, the second of its kind in South Asia, will be set up on a 35-acre of land on the other bank of the Karnaphuli River.
Marine cadets will get ‘Bachelor of Maritime Science’ degrees from the university and currently, the National University offers such degrees in the country.
