DHAKA: Whether the prospective customers have Taxpayer`s Identification Number (TIN), the Standard Chartered supplies readymade TINs illegally to make them fall into the ‘credit card’ trap.
In exchange of TIN, Tk 700 to Tk 1000 is taken from a customer whereas officially no fee is required to get TIN.
Years together Stan Chart is doing the practice openly and concerned people comment that this practice of Stan Chart is not at all acceptable under the purview of banking ethics.
Sources said that no fee is required for making TIN. Simply anybody applies to NBR he gets it. After collecting, this ill-gotten money extracted from the customers in the name of TIN officers at different levels of the bank shares the booty.
However some dishonest NBR officials are also involved in the racket. Bribing these dishonest NBR people the Stan Chart authority is carrying on this mal-practice years together. The matter is now open secret.
A number of customers expressing anonymity told banglanews that the Card section employees tell the customer that there would be no problem without TIN.
They don’t have to be worried about it. Only fill in a form along with Tk 700 we will arrange your TIN done. If the customer gives money Stan Chart collect TIN in a very short time.
According to gathered information, the money taken from the customer is shared with the NBR men and the bank collects TIN beyond the knowledge of the customer.
Even the customer does never know that the TIN is genuine or fake. The original copy of TIN in most cases lies in the file of the customer, it is learnt.
One customer told that he had no TIN. At this, a bank official told him to give Tk 1000 for TIN. Accordingly, I gave him the money but what they did he can’t say.
They got my TIN done and sent the card to my residence. “Even I cannot say while making TIN what income and expenditure was shown in the statement,” he said.
Another customer told that for TIN purpose that money was taken as government fee. I did not know that TIN does not need fee. Stan Chart played such foul he exclaimed!
When asked, a senior Bangladesh Bank official told banglanews he also heard earlier that Stan Chart get done their Credit Card customers TIN. But they cannot do that. However, as the matter has come to us we will look into the matter and if it is proved we will take action.
No comment was received from the Stan Chart authority. But a high official of Stan Chart admitted the TIN episode. The thing has now become well publicized. What benefit you will reap from writing TIN story. That official admitted the fee taking system.
