Digital library at 28 govt, pvt varsities

DHAKA: The University Grants Commission Digital Library (UDL) has been set up at 28 public and private universities of the country under a project financed by World Bank.

This initiative was taken under a project titled ‘Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP)’ being implemented by the government through the UGC at a cost of $81 million.

Under the project, the UDL subscribes to electronic-resources from acclaimed international electronic journals such as ACM, Emerald and JSTOR, a WB source said this Thursday.

The project promotes academic innovation in both public and private universities through a competitive funding mechanism which is known as the Academic Innovation Fund (AIF).

AIF’s aim is to improve the quality of teaching-learning and develop academic infrastructure.

A total of 196 grants have so far been awarded to 27 public universities and two private universities.

The project is also supporting the establishment of the Bangladesh Research and Education Network (BREN).

BREN provides high speed connectivity within the country and internationally, allowing teachers and students to access the latest knowledge and facilitating collaborative research across institutions of higher learning.
