CHITTAGONG: A Chittagong court on Tuesday sent an upazila chairman and a Union Parishad chairman to jail in a case filed under speedy trial act for the incident of BNP-Jamaat’s clash with law enforcers on May 13 in Nasiman Bhaban area of the port city.
The two detainees are Rangunia Upazila chairman Abu Ahmed Hasnat and Mariam Nagar UP chairman Mohammad Hossain.
Earlier the day, the two charge sheeted accused surrendered before the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Mansur and sought bail.
The court sent them to jail after denying their bail pleas.
Court sources said the court issued arrest warrant against the duo as fugitive accused after submitting charge sheet in the case.
On May 13, at least 150 people, including BNP leader Abdullah Al Noman, cops and journalists, were injured in a clash between police and BNP-led 18-party activists in Nasiman Bhaban area of the port city.
Police picked up 29 opposition activists during the hour-long clash.
The 18-party alliance announced to stage a protest rally in the port city on Monday for protesting the incident.
Later on May 14, six cases were filed with Kotwali and Khulshi Thanas accusing some 2100 opposition men for assaulting law enforcers during clash between police and BNP-led 18-party activists.
On May 23, police submitted charge sheet accusing leader and activists of BNP and Jamaat in three cases filed under speedy trial tribunal act.
