GAZIPUR: At least 20 people were injured in a clash between students and police in Jaidevpur-Shimultali road area on Saturday morning.
Students of Model Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) barricaded the road around 11:00am to protest changing of their degree from Diploma in Engineers to Diploma in Technician.
They did so because they thought it relegates the degree from 2nd class to 3rd class level, according to students.
Witnesses said students locked into clash with police when police hindered them from demonstrating on the street, leaving at least 20 of both sides injured.
Students claimed at least 15 of them were injured in the clash.
On the other hand, police claimed that some 5 to 6 police personnel were injured in student attack.
Student of MIST and Chhatra League leader Mizanur Rahman told banglanews, “Diploma engineers had 2nd class status till 2005.”
“But the government relegates the degree to 3rd class status for all the diploma engineers after 2005 and the students started demonstrating against the decision, he added.
Inspector of Jaidevpur Thana Abul Kalam Azad told banglanews, “Police were trying to bring the situation under control then.”
Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to avert any further clash, he added.
