VAT Day marked

DHAKA: The VAT Day was observed Tuesday for the second time in the country in a bid to boost tax collections and create awareness among the taxpayers.

The National Board of Revenue observed the June 10 as Vat Day nationally from last year.

Different government and non-government organizations chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day. A colourful rally was brought out from in front of NBR office at about 7:30am.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister awarded some 134 businessmen for their outstanding contribution in paying vat at a programme at Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the city on Tuesday.

NRB chairman Dr Nasir Uddin inaugurated the programme.

Besides, the tax administrator also observed VAT Week in the day.

President Zillur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate massages on the occasion.

The president in his message said, “Our main target is to ensure welfare of the people. We need huge amount of money for it.”

“Tax payers, Vat paying organizations, producers, importers and business community will play a role in the national economic development by paying tax on their income and Vat,” he added.

The Prime Minister in her message observed that an impressive progress in collecting internal revenue had been made in the four decades of independence.

She called upon the citizens to come forward alongside the government for improving the VAT system.
