DHAKA: The death toll rose to 112 on Sunday in a devastating blaze that swept through a clothes factory in Ashulia under Savar upazila.
The fire broke out on Saturday in the multi-floor Tazreen Fashion factory in Ashulia on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka.
Earlier on Saturday evening, the devastating fire broke out at a garments factory of Toba Group at Ashulia under Savar upazila.
Officials from the fire service earlier said many a workers of the factory were trapped inside and took shelter on the rooftop of the building awaiting rescuers while efforts were underway to extinguish the blaze mobilizing several fire fighting units.
The rescuers so far retrieved 112 bodies as the rescue operation primarily ended around 2:40pm, said Police Super of Dhaka Habibur Rahman.
He added; “Of them 43 have been handed over to their families after confirming their identities and 58 were sent to Anjuman Mufidul Islam as those could not been identified.”
Earlier it was estimated that death tolls put as high as 124.
It is still unclear what caused the fire, which started on the ground floor trapping many victims in the factory.
In a separate development, at least 14 people died when a under construction girders collapsed in the day in the port city Chittagong.
