DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Saturday expressed profound shock at the death of Asmani, the icon of poor Bengali housewife in the famous poem of Palli Kabi Jasimuddin-‘Asmani’.
In her condolence message, the premier said said Asmani was a unique character composed by Palli Kabi Jasimuddin symbolizing a poverty stricken little girl of Rasulpur with shattered dreams and broken spirit after her early marriage.
Asmani died at her village home at Rasulpur of Eshan Gopalpur union under Faridpur Sadar upazila last night at the age of 99.
Sheikh Hasina prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed sympathy to members of the bereaved family.
Asmani who had been suffering from old-age complications was treated at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital in June last.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina provided financial support for her treatment.
