DHAKA: Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said the government is working to upgrade standard of the universities to make them centers of knowledge and research.
The minister said this while inaugurating Kazi Nazrul Islam and Abbasuddin Ahmed Research and Study Centres at the Multipurpose Hall in Independent University of Bangladesh (IUB).

He, however, claimed the private universities are trying to upgrade their standard in line with the government order.
IUB has taken a praiseworthy initiative setting up the centers to educate the new generation to know the life and works of the two great personalities of all time, he further said.
IUB accorded reception to Nazrul Researcher and Professor Emeritus Rafiqul Islam, daughter-in-law of Kazi Nazrul Islam, Uma Kazi and noted singer Fedousi Rahman for their outstanding role in their respective fields.
The minister also inaugurated an exhibition of 125 rare photographs of Kazi Nazrul Islam and Abbasuddin Ahmed.
The exhibition will continue till Wednesday.
Among others, IUB board of trustee president Tauhid Samad, Vice-chancellor Prof Dr M Omar Ahmed, senior research scholar artist Mustafa Jaman Abbasi, Kazi Nazrul Islam’s grandson Khilkhil Kazi spoke in the programme.
