DHAKA: The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a High Court order that granted bail to Saiful Islam Duke, nephew of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, in August 21 grenade attack case.
A chamber bench of the Appellate Division led by senior Justice SK Sinha passed the order after hearing the arguments.
Duke’s lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain told banglanews, “The law enforcers arrested Duke on August 26, 2010 in connection with the grenade attack case. The HC granted him permanent bail on May 4, 2011.”
“On May 11 last year, the government filed a leave-to-appeal petition with the SC against the HC order granting him bail. Following the government’s leave-to-appeal petition, the Appellate Division granted it and stayed the HC order on July 21, last year,” he added.
At least 23 people, including Women Affair’s Secretary of Awami League Ivy Rahman, were killed and scores injured in the grenade blasts on the AL rally on Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21 in 2004.
