DHAKA: Industries Minister Dilip Barua Wednesday said traders are intentionally selling sugar in low price in retail market to endanger the government.

He also claimed the government has imported some 75,000 tonnes sugar to keep the sugar market stable in the upcoming Ramadan.

The industries minister came up with the assertion while talking to journalists in a press conference held at his office in the city.

Industries secretary AH Masud Siddiqui, additional secretary Khorshed Alam, BISIC chairman Fakhrul Islam were among others present at the press meet.

The minister said while the actual coast price for the importation is Tk 61, traders selling it from Tk 48 to Tk 53, which implies that a syndicate is trying to jeopardize the government.

The syndicate is aiming that the government would stop the sugar importation and afterward they will recover the loss lucratively, he added.

The growth in sugar sector is 7.18 percent while the total growth is 6.32 percent in the fiscal year 2011-12, he informed.
