DHAKA: Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) SM Nazrul Islam said the mass resignation letters of the agitating teachers would not be accepted.

He came up with the assertion while talking to journalists over the mass resignation warning of the BUET teachers on Tuesday.

He said, “Mass resignation is not accepted as per the rule, so we will not accept the collective resignation of the demonstrating teachers.”

Mentioning that the teachers are trying to blackmail the administration, he said, “The teachers are enforcing such programme violating the university rule. I do not have any decision in this regard. The syndicate will take all decisions in this regard.”

He added: “Many BUET teachers are now staying abroad. The syndicate may bring them to home in order to face the ongoing crisis if necessary.”

On July 11, some 24 BUET teachers resigned demanding resignation of its VC and Pro-VC.

Of them five are dean, three director and 16 departmental head.

On Monday, the teachers have vowed to resign collectively if its VC and Pro-VC don’t resign within July 22.

The decision was taken in an emergency meeting of BUET Teachers’ Association on the same day.

Earlier in the day, after a meeting with senior teachers, the Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said there is no need of movements or hunger strike as the government would take prompt steps to solve existing crisis BUET.

Calling upon the students to abstain from movements, he said, “Decision will be taken immediately after talking with President and Prime Minister.”

The crisis occurred in BUET when Teachers’ Association of the university started staging movements to press home their 16-point demand that include mainly the resignation of the VC and Pro-VC.
