Proposed tax on phone calls

Muhith assures of reconsidering

DHAKA: Finance Minister AMA Muhith Wednesday assured of deducting two percent tax at source on phone bill and reducing duty on SIM card and software import in the proposed budget.

He came up with the assurance in a meeting with the mobile operators at his office, the operators confirmed this to banglanews.

With Robi executive vice president Mahmudur Rahman, Chief executive officer of GrameenPhone Tore Johnson, chief executive officer of Airtel Chris Tobit, director of legal and regulatory affairs of Banglalink Zakiul Islam and other high officials of different operators were present in the meeting.

After the meeting, Robi executive vice president Mahmudur Rahman said the government has imposed Tk 600 tax per SIM card in the proposed budget which will obstruct the customer services in the grass-root level and ultimately hamper the ‘Digital-Bangladesh’ endeavor of the government.

He said the government has increased 30 percent tax on software import from three percent to indulge the development of local software manufacturing.
