DHAKA: Opposition BNP standing committee member Lieutenant General (retd) Mahbubur Rahman Wednesday urged the people of the country to build “mass-unity” for protecting the nation.
The senior leader of the party came up with the plea while addressing a human chain organized by Hridoy Bangladesh in front of the National Press Club in the morning.
The demonstration was held demanding withdrawal of fake cases against BNP leaders, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and unconditional release of them.
He said, “Bangladesh is now in a big crisis. The crisis of democracy is the biggest one.”
Calling upon 16 crore people to unite for protecting the democracy, he said, “Abduction and murder is being conducted to harm democracy.”
He added: “We have to unite ourselves to save the nation and soil. You have to protest against torture and misrule of the government.”
The former army official claimed that this is high time to join the anti-government movement.
With Hridoy Bangladesh founder, also Central BNP member Major (retd) Muhammad Hanif in the chair, the programme was also addressed, among others, by BNP Vice Chairman Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed and Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury.
