DHAKA: The holy Ramadan, the lunar month of self-purification through fasting and abstinence, began Saturday as the new moon was sighted in Bangladesh’s sky on Friday evening.
The National Moon Sighting Committee took the decision in a meeting held at the Islamic Foundation in the night after reviewing reports on moon sighting from different parts of the country and various agencies.
Lailatul Qadr, the night of divine blessing and benediction, will be observed on August 17 in the run-up to Eid festival.
President Zillur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia issued separate messages on the occasion.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and an occasion when Muslims across the world fast during the hours of daylight.
