DHAKA: A Dhaka court Sunday deferred until August 5 the indictment hearing against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, her elder son Tarique Rahman, also party’s senior vice-chairman, and others accused in the Zia Charitable trust graft cases.
Acting senior special Judge of Dhaka Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman passed the deferment order in response to a time plea by defense lawyer.
Khaleda’ lawyer advocate Sanahullah Mia submitted the plea saying that Khaleda could not appear before the court as she is visiting the port city to distribute relief among the landslide victims.
On December 08 last, Khaleda secured anticipatory bail for eight weeks in the Zia Orphanage Trust case.
According to the case statement, the accused persons “amassed Tk 2.86 crore for establishing Zia Charitable Trust abusing power” during the then BNP-led four-party alliance government.
Besides, on July 3 in 2008, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case with Ramna Thana, amid a massive anti-graft drive under state of emergency, accusing the ex-PM and BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique and four others of misappropriating over Tk 2 crore from the Zia Orphanage Trust fund.
On February 14, a Dhaka court fixed March 18 to give its order whether charges against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and three accused to take into cognizance in the Zia Charitable Trust case.
