The body mass index (BMI) is a statistical measure of the weight of a person scaled according to height. BMI is calculated as the individual’s body weight divided by the square of their height.
Metric Imperial BMI Formula-The metric bmi formula accepts weight measurements in kilograms & height measurements in either cm’s or meters
1 meter = 100cms
meters² = meters * meters
BMI = Weight in kilograms = kg/m²
Height in meters²
Asians are comparitively small statured compared to other races in the world. Hence the BMI does apply univerally for all in the world. Extensive studies have proved that asians have a different body mass indices and hence the following values apply.
Category BMI range – kg/m2
Starvation less than 14.9
Underweight from 15 to 18.4
Normal from 18.5 to 22.9
Overweight from 23 to 27.5
Obese from 27.6 to 40
Morbidly Obese greater than 40
Hence if an individual’s body mass index in Asia is 25, is not acceptable according to studies. He can very much be prone to developing various health risks.
So get your calculators out and calculate the actual BMI for Asians.
