CHITTAGONG: A Chittagong court on Monday granted anticipatory bail till June 5 to Jamaat lawmaker ANM Shamsul Islam in a case filed against leader-activists of BNP and Jamaat on charge of arson during clash between police and 18-party allies.
The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Mahabubur Rahman passed the order after hearing the bail plea.
Earlier in the morning, the city Jamaat Amir sought bail on surrender to the court in the case under Speedy Trail Tribunal Act.
Defense lawyer Advocate Manjur Ahmed Ansari told banglanews, “The High Court granted one-month anticipatory bail to the lawmaker on May 21 and asked him to surrender lower court by the time. So, he surrendered before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court and sought bail.”
Earlier on May 23, police submitted charge sheet accusing 53 leader and activists of BNP and Jamaat of assaulting law enforcers during May 13’s clash between police and BNP-led 18-party activists in Nasiman Bhaban area of the port city.
Kotwali Thana SI Shah Alam and ASI Rafique filed two cases under speedy trial tribunal act accusing 53 leaders including city Jamaat Ameer ANM Shamsul Islam MP, city BNP general secretary Dr. Shahdat Hossain.
On May 13, at least 150 people, including BNP leader Abdullah Al Noman, cops and journalists, were injured in a clash between police and BNP-led 18-party activists in Nasiman Bhaban area of the port city.
Police picked up 29 opposition activists during the hour-long clash.
Later on May 14, four cases were filed accusing some 1700 opposition men for assaulting law enforcers during clash between police and BNP-led 18-party activists.
