Contractionary monetary policy eases inflation: Atiur

CHITTAGONG: Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman said the rate of inflation, which frightens the economists, descended to a tolerable single-digit-figure due to the existing contractionary monetary policy.

Indicating the economists, he said, “Don’t exaggerate the inflation issue and I have no idea about the base of worries of the pessimists.”

He came up with the assertion while addressing a view exchange meeting organized by Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MEA) on Saturday noon.

He also said considering the inflation as a psychological matter, people should by buy less which will affect the inflation.

On January 26, the central bank Thursday adopted a contractionary monetary policy for January-June period of the current fiscal to face inflation.

The monetary policy statement released forecasting 6.5 to 7.00 percent growth domestic product (GDP) for 2011-2012 fiscal year.  

Among others, general manager of Pubali Bank Sirajul Islam Mia, managing director of Shahjalal Islami Bank Md Abdur Rahman Sarkar, deputy managing director of Sonali Bank Md Delwar Hossain Bhuiyan, deputy managing director of Janata Bank Md Mossarraf Hossain Chowdhury, managing director of Social Islami Bank Md Ali, Finalcial organization official Manowara Begum, Dr Md Mosiuddin Sadek and Inamul Haque were present in the meeting.
