RANGPUR: Voting for maiden Rangpur City Corporation polls is underway in 178 polling centers of the corporation on Thursday amid festive mood.
Earlier, voting started at 8:00am in the morning and will continue till 4pm.
Temporary stalls near polling centers have brought into a favor of village fair here. Voters rushed to the centers amid tick fog, banglanews correspondents report.
Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu cast his vote at Salema High School while Mostafizur Rahman Mostafa at about 9:00am cast vote at Alamnagar Government Primary School around 9:05 an.
The administration has identified 122 centres as risky out of 178 polling centres. Special security measures have been taken in the centers. A total of 4,000 law enforcers have been deployed, said sources concerned.
On Tuesday, Rangpur Police Super Saleh Mohammad Tanvir told banglanews, “Mobile courts will be active during polling day comprising six judicial magistrates and 45 executive magistrates.
Seven armed police personnel along with 24 cops and Ansar men will be deployed in every centre to ensure peaceful voting, the SP added.”
Some 12 candidates are competing for mayoral race and a total of 327 candidtes are running the race for general councilor post in 33 wards to become councilors of the newly-formed Rangpur City Corporation, while 91 women are competing for reserved-seat women councilors in 11 reserved wards.
Some 3, 57, 742 voters are expected to cast their votes in the polls. Amongst voters, female 1, 78, 614 and male 1, 79, 128 are likely to cast their votes.

Meanwhile, Rab and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel are patroling separately in the areas.
Some 10 numbers of striking forces are patrolling in each part out of four zones. Four special patrol teams were deployed in every zone till noon while six more teams will join with previous forces in afternoon.
On July 1, the government declared Rangpur district municipal town as City Corporation.
